The Financial Impact of Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is home to some of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, including Egypt, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates. Tourism is an important economic driver for the region, and it has a significant financial impact on the region’s economy. Tourism in the MENA region has been growing steadily in recent years. According to the World Tourism Organization, the number of international tourist arrivals to the region increased from 33 million in 2000 to over 80 million in 2018. This growth has contributed significantly to the region’s GDP, accounting for nearly 10% of total GDP in 2018.
The financial impact of tourism in the MENA region is also evident in the number of jobs it has created. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, tourism in the region directly supported over 8 million jobs in 2018, accounting for 8.8% of total employment in the region. Tourism also indirectly supported over 14 million jobs, accounting for 15.4% of total employment. The financial impact of tourism in the MENA region is also evident in the amount of money it has attracted from foreign investors. According to the World Bank, foreign direct investment in the region’s tourism sector increased from $1.1 billion in 2000 to $11.7 billion in 2018. This investment has helped to finance the construction of new hotels and resorts, as well as the creation of new jobs.
The financial impact of tourism in the MENA region is also evident in the amount of money it has generated in tax revenues. According to the World Bank, tourism-related taxes in the region increased from $2.6 billion in 2000 to $17.6 billion in 2018. This money has been used to fund public services and infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, and other transportation networks. Overall, the financial impact of tourism in the MENA region is clear. It has contributed significantly to the region’s GDP, created millions of jobs, attracted foreign investment, and generated billions of dollars in tax revenues. As the region continues to develop, tourism will likely remain an important economic driver.
