Muzaffarabad is the cultural and financial capital of Azad Kashmir in Pakistan. It lies on the banks of the Jhelum and Neelum rivers. By 1999, the population had risen to almost 750,000. Muzaffarabad is named after its founder, Sultan Muhammad Muzaffar Khan, who belonged to the Bamba Tribe. Common dialects spoken in Muzaffarabad are Punjabi and Kashmiri.
The Red Fort Sultan Muzaffar Khan, the founder of Muzaffarabad city, finally completed the construction of the Red Fort in 1646. The Dogra rulers further reconstructed and extended the fort for their political and military operations. The architecture of the fort embodies an eloquent design and structure.
It is surrounded on three sides by the Neelum River formally known as the Kishan Ganga River with steps leading to the banks of the river. Locally, it is known as the “Rutta Qila”. Pir Chinasi Pir Chinasi is located eastward of Muzaffarabad. It offers tourists with an amazing view of Muzaffarabad and is a travel favorite! The luscious green peak is ideal for hiking, trekking and camping activities. The tourism department has also constructed a tourist lodge at Saran, located 30 kilometers east of Muzaffarabad city on the top of a hill. Chikaar Chikaar is a beautiful summer station located 46 kilometers away from Muzaffarabad.
A few private hotels are available here for tourists to stay overnight. Notable caste families in this area are Rajput, Dogras, Khawaja, Shaal, Awaan, and Choudry. Tips Restaurants A dish recommended for Pakistanis and Kashmiris is Chicken Karahi accompanied by Kashmiri Nan for a traditional and mouth-watering meal.
